Each WD chex monitor features two black protein-based soil spots on a fibrous polyolefin substrate. These soil spots do not contain any natural blood and have no risk of contaminating the cleaning chamber and its contents. The soil mixture contains organic compounds that mimic the soil normally present on medical instruments and devices after use with patients.

When placed in the washer-disinfector, black soil is removed when exposed to effective cleaning cycle parameters. WD chex monitors are used with the Ultrasonic and Washer-Disinfector Monitor Holder (26915300, 26965300). The holder acts as a process challenge device, which covers the soil on one side of the monitor while leaving the other soil spot fully exposed. The covered soil simulates conditions that are challenging for cleaning. The open soil area simulates full exposure to cleaning cycle parameters where the WD chex monitor is placed.
